Investigating users’ perspectives on the development of bike-sharing in Shanghai

High levels of car dependence have caused tremendous challenges for sustainable transport development. Transport planners, therefore, seek ways replacing motor vehicles, as well increasing the proportion active travel. The bike-sharing scheme can be seen an effective way doing so, particularly in Asian cities. aim this paper is to investigate users’ perspectives on development using Shanghai example. Semi-structured interviews are used examine main factors motivating and impeding Shanghai. Our findings show that convenience, saving time financial savings major motivations; whereas problems with bicycles being poorly maintained abused by users, operational issues, issues unsuitable business model obstacles. In addition, also suggest a public private partnership could best option running clear areas responsibility. Financial incentives, bicycle-friendly infrastructure, regular management supportive policies should prioritised. order achieve targets set Master Plan 2035, planners policymakers integrate within wider travel system. • Convenience, reasons people use shared bicycles.
